Good Funds to Invest

Every Sunday, Dhirendra Kumar answers investors' questions on Fund ka Funda, an investment show on Star News. Here are a few quick answers to some of the questions

Q. I am a beginner in mutual funds and want to invest around Rs 3 lakhs including SIPs for 3 years. Which funds would you suggest?
A. Start investing only through SIPs. Choose 3-4 well diversified equity funds like Reliance Vision, Sundaram Select Focus, HDFC Equity or Birla Frontline Equity and divide your investment equally in these funds.

Q. I want to invest Rs 10,000 in mutual funds. Which funds should I choose?
A. Choose from any well performing top rated funds like DSP ML Top 100, Birla Frontline Equity or Franklin India Prime Plus.

Q. How is future of JM Basic (g) and Fidelity Equity (g).
A. Both are not very old funds, but they have done well till now. Keep reviewing their performance once in every 6 months.

Q. I want to invest in mutual funds to save tax of Rs 4000. Please advise me which fund would be ideal?
A. Choose from any well diversified five or four star rated tax saving fund like Birla Tax Relief 96, Magnum Tax Gain or HDFC Tax Saver.

Q. Is there any mutual fund scheme which gives me monthly income? Like post office MIS Scheme.
A. You can invest in MIPs (Monthly income plans). They predominantly invest in debt and even give monthly dividends. These are however not guaranteed. Choose from funds like HDFC LT MIP or Birla MIP.

Q. I have invested Rs 5000/mth thru SIP in SBI Magnum tax gain. Now I want to invest Rs 20000 lumpsum in Sundaram Tax Saver(G)? What is your opinion?
A. Both funds are well rated and have a good track record. You can invest in Sundaram Tax Saver.

Q. I have invested Rs 15000 in DSP ML Small & Midcap fund. What is its future?
A. The fund was launched last year and has done well till now. It can prove to be risky at times as it invests in small companies. Keep a watch on its performance.

Q. I want to invest in mutual funds for ten years. Which is better - Franklin India Prima Plus or Reliance Vision?
A. Both funds are good. Divide your investment between them.

Q. My portfolio is DSP ML Tiger, HDFC Equity, Fidelity Equity, Reliance Growth and ICICI Infrastructure Fund. Give me your advice for good return in 15 years.
A. This is a good portfolio. Continue to invest in these funds.

Q. Which is the best equity fund to invest by way of SIP?
A. Start a SIP in any performing fund having a five or four star rating. While choosing a fund have a look at its past performance and compare it with its peers. You can choose from funds like Franklin India Prima Plus, Birla Frontline Equity or Sundaram Select Focus.
