Sanjeev Sanyal, a government economist, has said that scores of young Indians trying for a handful of civil services jobs show their 'poverty of aspiration'. I have yet to watch the interview where he said this, but the statement was plucked out and became the talk of the town. Sanyal left a private job in the financial sector to join the government. He is now the member secretary of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, prior to which he was an advisor in the Finance Ministry. There, he helped write the economic surveys just ahead of the presentation of the annual Union Budget.
