A high-voltage scandal of a leading electric goods manufacturer

Polycab India controversy: Unravelling the rise & fall of this star

Polycab India, once a shining star in the electric goods market, has found itself in hot water. Since its debut on the stock market in April 2019, the company's value skyrocketed, making its shareholders nearly eight times richer by January 10, 2024. But now, it's caught in a storm of controversy.

In a surprise move, the Income Tax Department swooped down on more than fifty of Polycab's locations, including major ones in Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai. This came just a day after the company tried to quell rumours of tax dodging with a press release.

The investigation has unearthed some troubling details. Polycab is accused of hiding cash sales of a whopping Rs 1,000 crore from its official records. It also allegedly paid a distributor a hefty sum of Rs 400 crore to help skirt around regulatory eyes. This distributor is said to have bought raw materials for Polycab. Shockingly, the investigation unearthed another distributor that issued fake invoices for supplies that never existed, inflating the company's purchase records by over Rs 500 crore. On top of that, about Rs 100 crore in suspicious expenses were found.

Investors reacted swiftly and negatively to these revelations, with Polycab's stock price tumbling down 21 per cent on January 11, 2024. As the investigation continues, more surprises may lurk around the corner for this once high-flying company.

A word for investors

The situation with Polycab India serves as a compelling reminder of the importance of qualitative analysis in investing. While quantitative metrics are essential, they don't fully capture the integrity and character of a company's management - factors that are crucial for long-term stock performance. It's a bit like trying to understand a book by only reading its summary.

But, sifting through the vast sea of over 4,000 companies listed on the NSE and BSE and performing both qualitative and quantitative analysis for each is a mammoth task.
