This new fund has gone where few others dare

Having scrutinised Old Bridge's maiden fund investment disclosure, let's take you through some of the interesting aspects.

For starters, the fledgling fund - launched just last month - has so far deployed just 53.9 per cent of investors' money across 19 stocks as of January 31, 2024. The rest of it remains in cash. Since it is a focused fund, it has room to add 11 more stocks to its portfolio. (For the uninitiated, a focused fund can only invest up to 30 stocks.)

Interestingly, 68 per cent of the money has gone to mid- and small-cap companies. At a time when mid- and small-caps have roared in the last 12 months, it is indeed an intriguing call from the fund managers.

A closer inspection will leave you even more curious. It has seven stocks, comprising 18.7 per cent of the portfolio, that are not exactly popular in the mutual fund industry. They are:

None of these seven stocks are owned by more than 10 actively managed equity funds. In fact, Kaveri Seed has zero takers, whereas Old Bridge's focused fund has a 2.35 per cent allocation in the Hyderabad-based agribusiness company.
